Yes,
mathematics is more than just solving an equation correctly. When learners apply writing to mathematics,
they are justifying their thinking.
Writing about math allow teachers to evaluate the thinking of their
students. Learners are expected to justify (defend) their thinking with
pictures and words. Justification in
mathematics requires a learner to think critically as they explain the way in
which they solved a math equation.
Students
need the opportunity to strengthen writing in math class because they problem
solve, organize their thinking, develop math vocabulary, analyze informational
and prove mathematical comprehension. My perceived
areas of growth is to develop learners who are able to express their knowledge
while developing critical thinking. This
semester I have learned about the importance of gradual release of
responsibility. Writing in math is a learned task, therefore,
students have to be given the tools needed to become learners that write. I am working to ensure that I provide my
students with feedback that will help them express their thinking.

My questions for implementation of writing in math class to express comprehension are:
·
Are
students being provided ample writing time?
·
Are
learners sharing their thinking with peers?
·
Am
I (as the teacher) guiding students through their thinking?
·
Are
students being provided the opportunity to think critically with open ended
questions?
·
Are
provided inquiry moments promoting justification?
