Today I held conferences with five groups concerning their math strategies poster. I continued to read and hear about each students understanding of equal groups, arrays, skip counting, number lines, and repeated addition. Listening and reading about the way each group was able to collaborate was astonishing. Each student was excited to identify what they contributed to the outline. There were great examples of how to solve multiplication problems using the various strategies. I continued to ask clarifying questions that resulted in the development of a deeper understanding.
While meeting with small groups, students finished up their multiplication word problems. The multiplication unit began with identifying things that come in groups. The groups anchor chart was used to help students create multiplication word problems. Students were given a writing prompt to assist them with the creation of their world problems. The prompts was: Here are __________. Each ______ has _________. There are __________ in all. (The prompt was modified for some groups). Then the student demonstrated the product by skip counting and writing the multiplication equation. Composing multiplication word problems was a way for me check each students ability to connect a word problem and strategies.
I am still wondering about "Are my students beginning to understand the benefits and connection between writing and mathematics?"
