Day 2
Students are constantly talking, but act can become a learning opportunity. I provide opportunities for my students to teach each other what they know about a given topic. I introduced my students to "Turn and Talk" as a strategy during Number Talk within the first month of school. Students were arranged into groups of two and then labeled as A or B. Students will mentally solve an equation and "Turn and Talk" to discuss the strategy and steps they completed to solve the problem. Then selected students will share their solution and/or strategy with the rest of the classroom. This learning method has resulted in more students participating in Number Talk and correctly solving math equations.
I would usually select four students to share their writing with the entire. However, today I introduced "Turn and Talk" as a learning point during math writing. This portion of writing in math is similar to Number Talk. My classroom desks are arranged in groups, which makes it easier for students to work together. I labeled each desk A or B and some with C to promote student talk. However, students solved the mathematical equation before they were introduced to the new step during math writing. I explained to my students that "Turn and Talk" will be used to show the strategy used to solve and their math writing about equation. Also, I introduced students to sharing their writing on the ELMO for the entire class to view and hear.
I noticed an increased classroom dialogue today. While walking around and monitoring "Turn and Talk" I noticed students helping each other correct their writing and correcting their thinking will reading aloud. I observed that the students enjoyed working together to express their comprehension. The ability to use the ELMO is the most exciting new edition to mathematical writing. There are students getting use to the changes being made to the original routine. Therefore, I am looking forward to their progress during the next eight days. I am looking forward to watch my shy students develop their confidence, try new strategies, and write critically to display understanding.
