Today my students and I completed all three steps of the Writing in Math process that has been introduced. Today I noticed that more students are able to read the word problem and identify information that will help them solve the word problem. I taught my students they should read their word problem first, then label their known and unknown information. The next step is to solve the problem based on the operation determined by the clue words in the word problem. Students are able to complete the word problem using their strategy of choice. Lastly, students are able to write about how they solved their word problem.
Everyday I challenge my students to use a different multiplication strategy. I do this because I want to ensure my students understand that their is more than one way so solve an equation. I know that some students become comfortable with one strategy and want to use only that one. But, I want for students to build understanding for all strategies. I encourage students to signal me (fist in the air) if they need help completing completing a new strategy. Today a student took on the challenge and choose to use number line. I helped the student when needed as they solved the equation. The student was able to complete one number line with guidance and the second number line independently. Also, the student was able to write about the two different ways they figured out the product.
The overall success of Day 3 was great. I am noticing students becoming more confident as they work to problem solve. I love watching some students writing become more detailed as they reflect about their method used to complete their work. Students look forward to "Turn and Talk" because they are able to show and read their thinking to another classmate. Today I noticed students making changes to their writing as they shared it with each other. They were able to help each make changes to their writing the show a clearer understanding. While walking around and monitoring the classroom today I heard a student help another student reword their sentence to make it easier to read and clear to understand. Students enjoy reading to each other, however the most sought out task is getting your name pulled from the cup. Three student names are selected each day to place their reading on the ELMO and read to the entire class.
My question is "Are there other ways to integrate Shared Writing and math?"
