Day 1

Students have been learning about the importance of justification in mathematics.  Learners have been taught how to decompose a word problem to identify relevant information. The material deemed as important will be used to solve the word problem.  Students will then select a multiplication strategy of their choice to solve the problem.  I encourage my students to challenge themselves to not use the same strategy everyday.  The purpose of this request is for students to become experts with solving multiplication problems using various techniques.

Students have been introduced to math sentence starters to justify their thinking.  I began the school year selecting one sentence starter everyone would use for reasoning.  However, today students were given a copy of the math sentence starters to place in their notebook.  Today learners began selecting the sentence starter of their choice to show understanding.  I noticed that students were excited to have the opportunity to select their writing sentence.  I monitored the classroom during this portion of the lesson and provided assistance with selecting a sentence starter for some students.  I encourage my students to explain their thinking with more than one sentence.  To my surprise some students are working hard to develop at least three sentences.  However, there are some students who are working  towards writing more than one sentence, but I am glad they are writing to show comprehension.

The beginning of the school year was spent learning about mindsets.  I wanted students to know about fixed and growth mindsets and how they affect learning.  We spent moments discussing the importance of accepting challenges, learning from our mistakes, and ways to grow as mathematicians.  Therefore, I am noticing that my students are increasing their confidence.  I have observed students challenged their mindset to try new multiplication strategies.  I have witnessed students not quitting when I provide feedback concerning their strategies.   I am glad to hear "Oh, okay" and students working to correct their area of improvement.  I am looking forward to seeing the growth of my students as mathematical thinkers and writer.

This is my first year teaching third grade, therefore I wondering if I am making/developing purposeful learning experiences that support critical thinking and justification.
