My students and I brainstormed reasons why learners write in mathematics today. The purpose of this activity was for me to assess the thinking of my students. Students were expected to reflect about previous class discussions and personal experiences that contribute to a successful class discussion. Learners were capable of expressing various reasons why writing should happen in math class. Students acknowledged numerous benefits of being mathematicians who write. The best explanation for mathematical writing is it allows them to explain their thinking to other students and their teacher to show level of mastery.
While monitoring student work I noticed some learners discussing that writing in math as a way to stretch their brain. I ensured to spend the beginning of the school year discussing the importance of having a growth mindset. I wanted my students to understand the importance of not giving in math because math becomes more challenging in third grade. Students are introduced to math topics that differ from K-2 topics. Learners are introduced to multiplication, division and fractions. This shift in learning can be difficult, therefore learners have to believe they posses the ability to learn anything being taught to them.
