Today my students and I completed a word problem. Also, I held a conference with three groups concerning their math writing. Students began with gluing the word problem in their notebook. Then, they read the word problem and identified known and unknown information. Students are showing me their understanding of multiplication strategies through solving the word problems. Learners are showing me their understanding through justifying with words. My students problem solving and writing has shown me they have a great understanding of multiplication. Students are able to use multiplication strategies to figure out the product. I have noticed that student writing has improved. I have identified math vocabulary and more detailed writing during the justification of thinking.
Also, students have been divided into groups focusing on one of five different multiplication strategies. This learning activity requires students to work together, listen to the thoughts of others, and justify their thoughts. Conferencing with each group and listening to their understanding of their math strategy has served as a formative assessment. Also, I was to ask clarifying questions concerning each strategy. Most importantly students are excited about this learning activity and we cannot wait to see the final posters.
